| MARLBOROUGH IS NEW ZEALAND'S
largest grape growing and wine making region and is home to some
of New Zealand's finest wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc, which
is acclaimed throughout the world as the definitive benchmark
style for the varietal. Well over two thirds of New Zealand's
Sauvignon Blanc vines are to be found in Marlborough. The
Marlborough region is situated at the north-eastern corner of
the top of the South Island, due west of Wellington, New
Zealand's capital city.
The longer, cooler growing conditions in the southern regions
of New Zealand promote stronger and more vibrant fruit flavours
and balanced acidity levels. |
Relatively low rainfall during ripening protects the
grapes from developing botrytis and other fungal diseases.
The region's free-draining, alluvial stony soils help grape
growers to control the growth of their vigorous vines for
optimum quality.
Marlborough is suitable for a wide range of grapes. Wines
made from Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and
Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are also highly acclaimed. |
